Arrival/Location:

·      Location: Our shelter is located at 11 River Street (Queen St E & River St).

·      Parking: We have a parking lot behind the building (it fills up very quickly).  Please note that parking is prohibited in the laneway and under the bridge behind the building (even though you may see some cars parked there, the city does ticket). If you cannot find a spot, there is also street parking on Queen and River Streets. Otherwise the closest lot is a Green P, in Corktown Commons.

·     TTC: the 504 King or 501 Queen Streetcars pass directly by the shelter (corner of Queen/River).

 

Health & Safety:
As per our Health & Safety protocol, all volunteers are required to wear close-toed shoes and long pants/jeans. Although it is not required, we recommend that everyone’s tetanus vaccination is up to date (received in the last 10 years).

How are we volunteering at the Daily Bread Food Bank? 

Join us for a morning of food sorting and education about the necessities of food banks.  Volunteers will be categorizing donated food into boxes, checking for open packages and dents, checking best before dates and expiry dates, as well as bagging donated produce, proteins and dairy into individual portions.

Who is the Daily Bread Food Bank?

Daily Bread Food Bank fights hunger in our communities, providing food and support to almost 200 food programs across Toronto.

What services does the Daily Bread Food Bank provide?

Since its founding in 1983, Daily Bread has grown to become one of Canada’s largest food banks.  The bank supplies food to almost 200 food programs across Toronto.  It has recently been working to tackle the issue of food loss and greenhouse gas emissions.  They do this by rescuing fresh “perfectly imperfect” produce from local farms.

How are we volunteering with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC)?

This year we have organized a cleanup at Woodbine Beach Park.  Volunteers will be meeting at the Washrooms located at the East section of the park.  They will then head out and pickup

This event is family friendly!  Allow kids to be scientist and track what kinds of litter they find, all while being outside and protecting wildlife.

 

What is the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup?

The GCSC is a national conservation program that provides Canadians the opportunity to take action in their communities wherever water meets land, one bit of trash at a time.

How are we volunteering at The Riverwood Conservancy?
Spend an afternoon at the beautiful Riverwood Conservancy, a public park in the heart of Mississauga.  During this volunteer opportunity you will spend your time helping to garden and pull invasive vegetation to make room for native plants.  You will also be able to plant trees and native wildflowers to help maintain a habitat for wildlife.  This opportunity will continue rain or shine, however it will be cancelled in the event of a thunderstorm or extreme winds.

What is The Riverwood Conservancy?
The Riverwood Conservancy is a charity that provides programs and direction for the 150 acre Riverwood nature preserve, located on the shores of the Credit River in Mississauga.  Their mission is to enable all individuals to respectfully connect with nature and learn the importance of conserving natural spaces for future generations.

What services does The Riverwood Conservancy provide?
The Riverwood Conservancy is known for offering many different services.  They work on educating guests on the importance of preserving nature by leading Guiding and Scouting groups, the Junior Naturalist Club, the Family Discovery Program and The Enabling Garden School.  They also offer many different types of volunteering including student volunteers, placements and internships.

Over the month of May we will be collecting donations for first responder kits.  These kits will be given to women in need. Within these kits is a card filled with inspirational quotes and advice. 

Join us for an hour of card making for our BridgeNorth kits.  Help a female leaving the life of sexual exploitation with a card filled with inspirational words and encouragement. 

What is BridgeNorth?

BridgeNorth is a registered charitable organization, started in 2014 with the goal of seeing an end to sexual exploitation in Canada.

How are we volunteering at YMCA’s Walk for Strong Kids?

Volunteers will help to set up and tear down walking areas.  They will also help to supervise the parade of strong kids as they walk through the neighborhood.

What is Walk for Strong Kids?

The YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign is all about ensuring every child, regardless of financial circumstances, has access to all the programs and services they need to have a healthy, happy childhood.   On May 23rd, all children in YMCA Early Years Programs will walk in the YMCA Walk for Strong Kids to raise funds for this important cause. Every child who walks has gathered pledges from friends and family who believe in equal opportunity for all children.

What services does the YMCA provide?

YMCA is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Canadians in spirit, mind and body.  Local YMCA’s have programs that support Canadians in health and fitness, aquatics, child care, camps, employment services, education and training, youth engagement, and community involvement.

Volunteer opportunities:

 

Kitchen Prep: Sistering feeds over 200 women every day, 3 hot meals a day. Volunteers have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities—all vital—including food prep, sorting food donations, assisting with inventory, serving meals and helping with clean up.

  • Women only since there will be interactions with other women
  • Do not wear any open-toed shoes, no sleeves shorter than a t-shirt length (sleeves must be half-way between shoulder and elbow, no capped sleeves), and no pants/skirts/shorts shorter than knee length (unless wearing tights) - this is due to health and safety regulations
  • please wear comfortable clothing and shoes - you will be working on your feet and with food prep for most of your shift
  • No heavily scented products in the space (scent-free environment)
  • No valuables in the space
  • Please be respectful to the participants we serve by keeping overly showy jewellery and clothing at home
  • We welcome pictures of your group in our space but to adhere to the privacy and confidentiality policies for the women and trans folks who use our services please do not take any pictures/videos of participants or the space without arranged consent with Sistering

What are we doing? Preparing & Serving a Community Meal!

 

Volunteers will host a breakfast for 30 to 50 men and women who are homeless, precariously housed, and/or do not have a permanent address – people for whom hunger is an ever-present risk. Volunteers will help with all aspects of meal preparation - cooking, preparing, serving, and clean-up, potentially making the meal with WoodGreen clients themselves.

Who is The Scott Mission?
The Scott Mission was founded in 1941 and is a non-denominational Christian organization responding to the needs of the poor, homeless, abandoned and vulnerable of all ages. The Mission offers practical, emotional and spiritual support to thousands of people every year - and everyone is welcome regardless of their faith background.

What services does The Scott Mission provide?
Among their many services, the Scott Mission offers daily hot meals, a low-cost daycare, a summer camp for children and youth, free good-quality clothing, groceries, shower and laundry facilities for the homeless, an overnight program, shelter, and an after-school program for children and youth. The Mission’s focus is the poorest of the poor.
