The Greater Vancouver Food Bank was set up as a temporary relief to the hunger crisis in 1983 and has grown significantly in the four decades since then. Today the GVFB provides assistance to approximately 15,000 individuals monthly across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, and the North Shore.The GVFB provides food support to a network of 140+ Community Agencies. SPEC's community center Repair Cafés bring together local volunteers with a knack for repairing with participants who need help fixing everything from bicycles to electronics. Our in-house Mini Café will focus on minor textile repairs, and their helpful and knowledgeable menders will help you get started on that repair you have been putting off. Don't need anything repaired? Come anyway to learn about all of SPEC's amazing sustainability projects.
This event is flexible! Join us in the 20th floor boardroom for 30 minutes or 2 hours - whatever works for you. Drop-ins welcome and treats will be provided.

City Farmer was established in 1978 at the Vancouver Community Conservation Centre (VCCC) as a six-month project initiated by Canada’s Federal Ministry of Mines, Energy and Resources. The project aimed to teach people about energy conservation. For over 60 years, CSHC has continued to expand its reach across BC, and now serves over 150 children and families annually. Reading Is Empowerment! There are 50,300 elementary school students in BC who struggle with low literacy. That’s one in every 11 school children. ONE TO ONE offers programming across B.C. that leverages the power of one-to-one connections to help children develop literacy skills and reading confidence – at no cost to schools or families. At the heart of our literacy program is the unique relationship between students and their reading partner – whether that’s a trained volunteer literacy tutor or a child’s parent/caregiver. We equip caring adults with strategies to encourage young readers’ interest in reading, boost their confidence and strengthen their literacy skills. Volunteers will portion out meals (such as mashed potatoes with vegetables and chicken breast or a pasta dish), professionally seal the packages, then label and divide the meals into crates to be frozen. Frozen meals that are microwaveable are a huge benefit to individuals living in low income housing as they may not have more than a microwave or a hot plate. There is less waste with frozen meals and they are also very easy for people with low mobility to prepare. A Loving Spoonful is a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization that provides free, nutritious meals to people living with HIV and co-existing illness in Metro Vancouver and the surrounding areas. The past couple of years they have grown as an organization and are now making their own meals at a local kitchen, and packaging them into individual containers to freeze at their warehouse at 1449 Powell Street. A Loving Spoonful also supports various low income housing initiatives by providing subsidized meals. | 20 | 21 |

Walkathon Help the athletes of Special Olympics BC – North Shore with their Annual Walkathon event! At this event, the athletes raise funds for the organization and partake in a walkathon along the West Vancouver seawalk. Volunteers are needed to assist with setup and tear down at the event, as well as to walk along the seawalk with the athletes helping to raise awareness of their cause. Special Olympics BC – North Shore is a grassroots organization with volunteers working to support the goal of providing sport opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. Over 200 athletes on the North Shore alone train and compete in local programs, events like their annual walkathon help contribute towards venues, equipment, and uniforms. Special Olympics believes in providing equal opportunity for everyone, athletes of all ages and abilities are invited to compete, regardless of their skill level. This event runs rain or shine and is always full of a lot of smiles and positive energy!
